Oh,
My Aching Joints!
Knee and joint pain - what
a bother it can be! Besides being able to predict when
it is going to rain, there is not much good I can
really say about it. Degenerative joint disease, or
osteoarthritis, is not unusual in the over-50 crowd like
myself. That is because over time our cartilage, the
rubbery “shock absorber” in our joints gets stiffer,
less elastic, and more susceptible to damage. As the
cartilage wears away we experience pain.
As you probably
already know, when
we deal with aches and pain in our everyday lives it
affects everything, and not just how we move. When we
do not feel good, we tend to see things differently with
different tinted glasses. Pain changes the way we
interact with people, and how we respond to the
day-to-day things life brings our way.
If you are like so many
others who know about joint pain first hand, you will be
happy to know that there are a wealth of
treatment options
for those achy knees, fingers and other important body
mechanisms. Thankfully, they do not all involve
surgery!
So what are some
options for relieving joint pain?
Lose weight.
If you are overweight, losing some of those extra pounds
can help. Shedding just 10 excess pounds can make a
significant difference in how your feel! Start by making a few small
changes to your lifestyle. You will be motivated to
continue when you feel that extra room in your clothes!
Start exercising.
And if you have already started, do not quit! Not only
will that help you lose weight, but it keeps you off the
vicious cycle (and I am not talking about your bike).
It is easy to get caught up in a vicious cycle when you
are hurting: You hurt so you do not feel like
exercising, which causes your joints to weaken even
more. Your doctor can tell you which low-impact exercises are right for you in your specific
situation. There are plenty of things you can do that
will not put pounding pressure on your knees and other
joints.
Use a topical cream.
A recent
university study as published by the Journal of
Rheumatology (click
here to read on our website) found that cream
containing glucosamine is effective for pain relief when
applied directly to the knees of people suffering from
osteoarthritis. The people who participated in the
study suffered from knee pain several days a month and
experienced morning pain and stiffness in their knees.
Most participants found relief from knee pain within
four weeks. Our Active-ESE is a similar formula
containing emu oil, glucosamine HcL, MSM, menthol and
other specially patented ingredients. My patients give
Active-ESE rave reviews for giving fast relief to aching
joints and arthritis!
If you have
osteoarthritis, you probably will find that your pain
tends to vary. You will have good days and not-so-good
days. And yes, you may even be able to predict the
weather better than the guy on T.V! But you do not have
to live with the pain. There are things you can do to
help yourself and hopefully the suggestions above can
get you started.
