Good
News for Omegas Just Keep on Coming!
As a doctor, I have
the good fortune to receive a lot of good medical
information and research that is not always immediately
available to the general public or published readily by
the news media. So when new studies are released that
are related to weight management, I certainly pay
attention to keep them in mind for my patients.
A study just recently
released indicates that omega-3 fatty acids may play a
part in inhibiting the development of fat cells and even
possibly lead to the reducing of body fat. This is a
study that was done because results from an earlier
study in rodents showed that DHA decreases body fat and
fat accumulation. The researchers in this study decided
to investigate as to whether it would also have the same
effect in human fat cells (called adipocytes).
So exactly how does
that all work?
One of the fatty acids
that comprise omega-3 fatty acids is called
docosahexaenoic acid (or DHA). DHA was used in the study
and was found to have triggered a process called
apoptosis (programmed cell death) that reduces the
number of viable fat cells. Researchers also found that
DHA significantly decreased the accumulation of fat by
stopping the maturing process of pre-adipocyte cells
developing into mature fat cells. In mature fat cells,
they found that DHA also increased fat breakdown
compared to the control set.
That is extraordinary
news! The researchers in this particular study have now
called for further studies to be done in living human
beings as to whether dietary supplementation can have
the same benefits. The outlook is promising!
How does this all add
up? It means that the benefits of making sure you have
enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet just keep adding
up! I have only outlined one particular study regarding
omega-3 fatty acids; but there are hundreds more out
there that continually point to the importance of having
enough these in your diet and several important ones are
on our website that you can read at any time.
Make sure that you are taking the highest quality fish
oil of a pharmaceutical-grade quality with a GMP and ISO
9001-2000 rating (like our Active Omega) that many
supplements do NOT have. This ensures that each batch
undergoes stringent testing to ensure purity, quality
and removal of any mercury, PCBs, dioxins or peroxides.
After all, you should want only the best for yourself!
