Fish Oil - Not a Secret Anymore!

    The studies just keep coming in and piling up on all the ways that Omega-3 fish oils promote better health and proper functioning of the human body.  Here’s a short synopsis of some recent research:

-         A study by Dr. Joseph Hibbeln of the United States’ National Institute of Health and funded by Britain’s Medical Research Council showed that women who eat seafood while pregnant may be boosting their children’s IQ in the process. Researchers examined issues including the children’s social and communication skills, their hand-eye coordination and their IQ levels. Results showed that those who ate two or three servings a week had smarter children with better developmental skills. Children whose mothers ate no seafood were 48 percent more likely to have a low verbal IQ score, compared to children whose mothers ate high amounts of seafood.

-         A study by researchers at the University of Western Australia confirms that mothers taking fish oil supplements benefit kids’ brains too! The children of mothers who had taken fish oil supplements displayed significantly better hand-eye coordination, scored higher on tests for vocabulary and language comprehension, and had longer phrases in their speech.

-         Another Australian study at the University of South Australia looked at combining fish oil supplements with moderate exercise and found that Omega-3 supplements helped participants in the study lose weight – all without dieting! They believe that the omega-3 fatty acids increased the elasticity of blood vessel walls and improved the flow of blood to muscles during exercise, thus making exercise more effective according to Professor Peter Howe.

-         Numerous studies have shown that Omega-3 rich foods and supplements can help with bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, prevent and treat cancer, inhibit stroke, reduce arrhythmia, combat brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, improve skin conditions and cut the risk of heart attack!

What better “miracle” could you ask for in a tiny little supplement?!  If asked what single supplement could be taken daily with the most benefit – many doctors answer, “Omega-3 fish oil supplements.”

The key is to make sure that you are taking the highest quality fish oil of a pharmaceutical-grade quality with a GMP and ISO 9001-2000 rating that many supplements do NOT have. Baked Apples with Granola

Great for dessert....or breakfast!

2 large crisp apples (such as Braeburn, Gala or Fuji)
2 tablespoons raisins or sweetened dried cranberries

2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
4 teaspoons butter or margarine, softened
4 Nature Valley® crunchy granola bars (2 pouches from 8.9-oz box) (any flavor), crushed
Milk, cream or fruit-flavored yogurt, if desired

Prep Time: 10 min
Start to Finish: 15 min
Makes: 4 servings

1. Cut apples in half lengthwise. Using spoon, remove and discard cores, making at least a 1-inch indentation in each apple half. In microwavable pie plate, arrange apple halves, cut sides up. If needed, cut thin slice off bottoms to keep halves from tipping.

2. Fill each apple half evenly with raisins and brown sugar; dot with butter. Cover with microwavable plastic wrap, folding back one edge 1/4 inch to vent steam.

3. Microwave on High 5 to 6 minutes or until apples are tender. Top each with granola. Serve with milk.

Question: How does Active 8 help people with Diabetes lose weight?

Answer from Dr. Steelman: The magnesium in Active 8 helps the pancreas secrete insulin in the person with Type II diabetes. It also helps the insulin work more efficiently (including insulin taken by those with Type I). It lowers insulin resistance and allows a lower amount of insulin to control the same amount of sugar in the blood. Lower insulin levels mean more fat burning, less fat storage and lower cravings for carbohydrates.
